Real life application!
So today I finally secured myself an internship. Well I suppose it could be seen more as a volunteer position but I’m still really excited about it. I already have been spending time at the Mission Hill School on Monday mornings but I’ve found that I’m not learning a great deal there. It’s wonderful to be able to help them out with projects they have but in terms of applying what I’m learning in school it hasn’t really happened yet. Also, I don’t think I want to work in a school library setting so that doesn’t provide much excitement for me either. So I knew that with my schedule opening up even more in the Spring that I needed to find something a bit more to fill my time that would also give me some practical experience. And since there are not a great deal of paying jobs out there for people like me with no experience I figured I would check out more internship possibilities.
So that is how I found myself at the State Library today in the State House. Now first I should probably explain my obsession with all things political. I think it comes from my obsession with the series The West Wing which forever gave me, a probably incorrect, idea of how government works. In any case, there is something about the political process and being surrounded by it that really excites me. So the chance to actually work in the State House was just too good of an opportunity to pass up.
The Mass State Library was actually established in 1826 and holds all sorts of governmental and historical documents. You can find out more about it here.
Currently they have a whole section of the library that is only searchable through actual card catalogs- it is not cataloged online at all. So that is the project I will be working on. I will not be doing original cataloging but copy cataloging. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve learned so far in my Cataloging class so I’m really looking forward to being able to actually applied what I’ve learned in class. For now I’m just going in on Friday mornings which will be perfect. I’m really looking forward to it.
Now if I could just find a job that would pay me!
